Ammonia Stripping System

Technip Ammonia Stripping System is engineered for the efficient removal of Ammonia & H2S from industrial effluent and process condensate streams. The system enhances Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant performance, ensures compliance with environmental standards, and enables treated water reuse across

Process and Features

  • Packed Column Design: The effluent is introduced into a packed column, where its pH is elevated using caustic agents such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or lime (Ca(OH)₂) to convert ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) into ammonia gas (NH₃). Air or steam flows upward counter-current to the liquid, stripping the ammonia into the vapor phase. The separated gas can then be recovered or neutralized downstream for safe disposal.

  • Process Optimization: High ammonia removal efficiency—typically up to 90% or higher—is achieved through precise control of temperature, pH, air-to-water ratio, and contact area within the packed bed. Automated monitoring and control of these parameters ensure stable operation, energy efficiency, and consistent effluent quality.

  • Integration with ZLD & MEE Systems: Installed upstream or downstream of Multi-Effect Evaporators (MEE) or ZLD units based on the application, the ammonia stripper reduces ammonia load, preventing scaling, corrosion, and fouling in downstream heat exchangers and evaporators. This integration improves thermal performance and reduces maintenance frequency.

Advantages & Value

  • Cost-Effective Ammonia Removal:  Simple, robust, and energy-efficient system offering high throughput and reliable continuous operation. It also helps reduce both OPEX and CAPEX by minimizing load on the Condensate Polishing Unit (CPU) through effective upstream ammonia removal.

  • Environmental Compliance: Ensures treated effluent meets discharge or reuse standards, minimizing ammonia toxicity and supporting sustainable wastewater management.

  • Enhanced ZLD Reliability: By removing ammonia prior to evaporation, the system enhances downstream equipment efficiency and extends service life.

  • Flexible Operation: Suitable for diverse applications using air stripping (low cost) or steam stripping (high efficiency) or Combination Steam & Air stripping configurations depending on site conditions.

Applications

The system is widely used across various industries, including:

  • API and Pharmaceutical Plants
  • Molasses-Based Distilleries
  • Chemical and Agro-Chemical Industries
  • Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs)
  • Landfill Leachate Treatment Facilities
